The ASA, founded in 1941 by Nigerians Nwafor Orizu, Mbonu Ojike and Kingsley Ozuomba Mbadiwe, and John Karefa Smart of Sierra Leone, participated in the various anticolonial activities in New York. The AAA&R, established in 1943, was more involved in fostering an increase in the number of African students studying in the United States and in educating the American public about the realities of Africa. Nigerian Kingsley Ozuomba Mbadiwe was the founder and director of the Academy." [International Jr. of African Historical Studies, JSTOR.]
